Thinking about visiting Banff in October and not sure what to expect? We’re here to help you find out!
October in Rockies is a time of transition, often showcasing a unique blend of seasons. While the first half of the month typically brings pleasant temperatures, beautiful fall foliage and excellent hiking among unfrozen lakes, you’ll be quickly putting your layers on if you decide to visit in the second half of this month!
Either way, the summer craziness is over and you can expect lesser crowds as well as some first off-season deals, especially towards the end of the month. If you prefer a more relaxed atmosphere, this could be one of the best months for you to visit Banff! Just remember to come prepared with extra layers as the weather starts to be a bit unpredictable and first snow dustings may (and most likely will) arrive.
This is also the last month to catch a shuttle to Moraine Lake before it closes for the season, though you can still enjoy the blue color of Lake Louise for the whole month.
Now, let’s dive into what Banff in October is like and everything you should know to plan your visit.
BANFF WEATHER IN OCTOBER
October in Banff marks the shoulder season which means the weather is really starting to be cool and crispy, especially during the nights and early mornings. The average temperatures range from about 10°C (50°F) to -2°C (28°F) between the day and night, though the differences between the first and second halves of the month are notable.
The first two weeks often bring some sunny and warm(ish) days and you can still catch yellow larches and fall colors at the very beginning of the month, which makes it a great time for hiking. But keep in mind that fall doesn’t stick around for too long in Canadian Rockies. Rather than a full season, it really is just a window of few short weeks (sometimes even days lol). If you visit Banff in October and it’s nice, get outside while you can!
The weather starts to be a lot more unpredictable during the second half of October and we can usually see the first significant snowfall, which sticks around at higher elevations. The nights are mostly below freezing at this point and the days are getting shorter, though there’s still plenty of daylight to enjoy the Rockies and the lakes remain blue for the whole month before they start freezing over in November.
What to Wear in Banff in October
As much as we’d love to predict what’s the weather going to be like during your visit, nobody can do that, especially during the shoulder season. October can bring t-shirt weather one day and snow the next. So regardless of when you visit in October, be sure to pack layers – long sleeve (ideally merino wool if you plan to go hiking), sweather or fleece, warm jacket, shell jacket, waterproof boots or shoes, beanie and gloves are all essentials. These are big mountains, after all, and every year in Rockies is different. But if you come prepared, it’s never a bad time to visit and there’s plenty of things to do in Banff in October. So let’s get into that.

WHAT TO DO IN BANFF IN OCTOBER
Fall and Larch Season Hiking
Setting out on a larch season hike is one of the best experiences you can have in Banff in fall! While the last week of September brings the best chances to see the golden larch trees, the colors typically still linger around in the first week of October (not guaranteed though). After that, they start to lose their needles as the first snowfall comes to the mountains, but you’ll still be able to see golden aspens in lower elevations and the lakes remain unfrozen for the whole month.
If you’re coming to Banff in October with intention to see the fall colors and venture on trails, we’d recommend planning your visit as early in the month as possible. Don’t forget to carry a bear spray as the bears still remain active.
Hot Springs
There’s nothing like soaking your body in a hot water after a crispy fall day spent outside. Can’t get much better than that! October is one of the best times to check some hot springs in and around Banff:
» Banff Upper Hot Springs
Highest operating hot spring in Canada and one of the must-visit spots while in Banff!
» Radium Hot Springs
If you don’t mind 1.5 hour of driving from Banff or heading that direction anyways, Radium Hot Springs is one of British Columbia’s top natural hot springs located in Kootenay National Park.
» Kananaskis Nordic Spa
Ultimate mountain retreat in beautiful Kananaskis Country, just under 1 hour from Banff.
» Fairmont Spa Banff Springs
Award winning day spa inside of the famous Fairmont Banff Springs hotel.
» Hidden Ridge Resort
Guests of this intimate resort tucked away on Tunnel Mountain can enjoy outdoor hot pools with amazing views.
» Fox Hotel & Suites
Have you ever soaked in a cave-like indoor hot pool? You can do so at Fox Hotel & Suites!
Visit Moraine Lake or Lake Louise
October is a last month to catch a shuttle to Moraine Lake as the road closes for the season by mid October. The last day to visit in 2024 is set to October 14th as the road typically gets covered by snow shortly after that.
You can still enjoy the blue color of Lake Louise for the whole month though and it gets a lot easier with parking, especially after the Canadian Thanksgiving. By the end of the month, you might even witness it after the first snowfall which makes for the most magical show!
Banff Gondola
Taking a gondola ride up to the summit of Sulphur Mountain is the most accessible way to get amazing views of the town of Banff and surrounding nature from above. If this is your first time visiting Banff, we’d say it’s a must do activity and it’s great not only in October, but year-round (yes, even in the winter!). Just don’t forget to pack layers as it’ll be a lot colder up there comparing to the town.
Visitors can enjoy wooden walking trails, mountaintop dining experience at Sky Bistro and most importantly – great 360° views.
Note that you can also hike up via Sulphur Mountain Trail instead. The trail goes through a series of switchbacks and takes around 4 hours to complete (out-and-back).
Stargazing and Northern Lights
Watching the night sky in Banff is a memorable experience as you’ll find yourself under one of the darkest skies on the planet! October is a great time for stargazing as the nights are clear and not that crazy cold yet (at least for Canadian Rockies standards). If you’re lucky, you might even see the northern lights dancing on the sky, but note that Banff is not a prime location for aurora borealis and we wouldn’t recommend planning your trip to Banff around it.
That being said, Lake Minnewanka or Vermillion Lakes are great locations for stargazing in Banff National Park. Or if you don’t feel like going on your own, you can consider one of these guided tours:
» Banff Sunset & Stars – 2hr Walking Tour
» Stargazing Tour – Kananaskis After Dark
Drive the Icefields Parkway
Known as one of the most beautiful drives in the world, this 230 km long road between Banff and Jasper is absolutely stunning any time of a year.
Driving the Icefields Parkway in October means that the lakes along the way are still blue, there is fall foliage lining the road and there might be first snow dustings on the mountain peaks. Pretty magical, if you ask us!
That begin said, there is a chance of winter road conditions on the Icefields Parkway in October. Make sure to check the road condition reports on 511 Alberta before the drive and gear up with winter tires if there was a recent snowfall.
Can’t miss spots along Icefields Parkway (as they go from Banff to Jasper)
» Herbert Lake
» Bow Lake
» Peyto Lake
» Waterfowl Lakes
» Mistaya Canyon
» Parker Ridge Trail
» Columbia Icefields (take a guided glacier hike for a once in a lifetime experience)
» Tangle Creek Falls
» Athabasca Falls
Caving
Caving is a fantastic and unique way to experience Rockies. While the tours take place outside of Banff NP, it’s just a short drive to Canmore, so we have to mention it.
Caves have consistent temperature of 5°C (41°F) year-round, so it’s a perfect activity for any-season. These guided tours will take you under the surface of Grotto Mountain that hides one of the longest cave systems in Canada! No experience necessary, but note that caving can be physically demanding activity.
Horseback Riding
Banff’s horseback riding season spans into the first half of October, offering a unique opportunity to experience the stunning fall foliage against the backdrop of the majestic Rockies.
There are tours for all levels, just be sure to check availability and weather conditions.
Biking
If you’re into biking and don’t mind layering up, biking is a great thing to do in Banff in October. Especially if you can get out on a warmer sunny day in the first half of the month.
There are numerous road biking options as well as mountain bike trails, but one of the classics we’d recommend is to bike the Legacy Trail between Banff and Canmore. Check Parks Canada for trail conditions and reports.
Lake Minnewanka Road and Boat Cruise
Driving up to Lake Minnewanka means you can visit not one, but three lakes in just one short drive outside of town. Johnson Lake, Two Jack Lake and Lake Minnewanka are all beautiful objectives along one road, where you can often spot some wildlife, too.
You can also enjoy a guided boat cruise on Lake Minnewanka until October 14th, which is a last day of operation before they shut down for the winter.
Wildlife Tours
Seeing wildlife in their natural habitat is one of the most exciting aspects of visiting Banff and the slow seasons (spring and fall) tend to be the best times to see animals.
In October, there is a good chance that you’ll see large herds of elk, but note that it’s their rutting season and male elk can become extremely aggressive protecting their harems. They can potentially attack anyone or anything that gets too close, so please remember to always keep your distance.
Apart from elk, you might see deer, bighorn sheep and other smaller species. Bears can also be spotted, though they are usually higher up in the mountains preparing for hibernation. Be sure to carry bear spray if you’re heading out to trails.
Taking a wildlife tour can increase your chances even more as the experienced guides know where to go:
» Year Round Tour: Banff and its Wildlife
» Banff Highlights & Wildlife | Small Group Adventure
» Banff: Highlights and Wildlife Group Tour
» Banff: Wildlife and Sightseeing Minibus Tour
Via Ferrata
October is also the last month to experience Via Ferrata at Mt. Norquay which is one of the coolest ways to experience Banff (altough not for those scared of heights). It’s a fun adventurous activity somewhere between scrambling and rock climbing.
There are multiple routes for all abilities and all tours are guided, so you don’t have to worry if you’ve never tried before.

IS BANFF IN OCTOBER WORTH IT?
Absolutely! There’s really no bad time to visit Rockies as each month brings some unique conditions, however it’s important to realize that October weather can be unpredictable. While the month often begins with warmer days and stunning fall foliage, it’s not uncommon to see the first snow towards the end of it. As long as you’re prepared for it, you can have a wonderful time in Banff in October. And as the saying goes, “If you don’t like the weather in Banff, just wait five minutes.”
Keep in mind that some activities and roads may close by mid-October. Be sure to do your research and plan your visit accordingly to avoid disappointment.
WHERE TO STAY IN BANFF IN OCTOBER
There is plenty of hotels, lodges or chalets that you can choose from when visiting Banff, but fall in Rockies calls for cozy stays where you can sip a hot cocoa in front of a fireplace. Just the perfect way to unwind after a crispy fall day of exploring.
To be honest, staying in Banff can get expensive. However, the good news is that October brings the first off-season deals, especially in the second half of the month. Here’s a few places we recommend checking out if visiting Banff in October.
Apartment-style property located in a secluded area on Tunnel Mountain. Great fall getaway option with outdoor hot tubs, sauna and fireplaces, given that you don’t mind being a bit further from downtown.
Moose Hotel is undoubtedly one of the nicest places to stay in downtown Banff, with comfortable rooms and rooftop hot tubs with amazing views of Cascade Mountain.
Intimate mountain resort located near Lake Louise that feels incredibly tucked away, yet it’s close to some top attractions in Banff National Park. One of our favourite stays in Rockies!
There is truly no other place in Banff as iconic as the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel. You’ll be guaranteed with a romantic stay like from a fairytale – if you’re ready to splurge. Note, that this hotel is located outside of downtown, but in a walkable distance.
