THINGS TO DO AROUND NORDEGG, ALBERTA
Not that you’ve picked one of the cozy Nordegg cabins, you might be wondering about things you can do in the area, isn’t that right? Nordegg is amazing for year-round outdoor activities and here are some of the best things and places you can explore.
Abraham Lake
Abraham Lake is Alberta’s largest reservoir and although artificially created, it’s just as stunning as other lakes in Canadian Rockies. If you’ve seen photos of lake with frozen bubbles, then those were most likely taken at Abraham Lake. This is one of the best spots to see this natural phenomenon of methane bubbles trapped in the ice. But it won’t disappoint you in open water seasons either – expect gorgeous bright blue color!
Via Ferrata Nordegg
If you’re interested to try mountain climbing, but don’t have any experience, then Via Ferrata at Mt. Stelfox might be a perfect way to start! It’s safer and more beginner friendly than classic rock climbing and makes for a day full of adventure.
Heli Flight
David Thompson Country is one of the few places in Canadian Rockies where you can take a helicopter tour, because it’s outside of any national park. And let us tell you something, seeing that beauty from above is an experience like no other! We’ve been fortunate to do it twice – in fall and winter. Both flights included landing in the wilderness and did not disappoint.
We flew with Rockies Heli both times from their base at Abraham lake and booked their 20 minute flight + snowshoeing tour.
Mine Site Tour
Nordegg is a former coal mining town and you can actually take a guided tour around the historic mine site during the summer months! Get more info here.
Miners' Café
Stop at Miners’ Café to grab some homemade pies, soups or sandwiches during your stay in one of the Nordegg cabins. While this place is mostly known for their pies, we weren’t looking for anything sweet the day we visited, so we got their Mexican burritos and they were absolutely delicious!
Crescent Falls
Crescent Falls is a series of two beautiful waterfalls, located at Crescent Falls Provincial Recreation Area, just under 30 minutes drive from Nordegg. Despite being a short trail, there is no lack of great views!
